🌗A Once-a-Year Romance You Can Catch Just by Looking Up
Every August, I find myself paying a little more attention to the night sky — because this is when the Perseid meteor shower puts on its best show. And this year (2026) is especially unusual: on August 12th, the world will witness a total solar eclipse, and that very same night, the Perseids will reach their peak. I can't say for certain how rare a combination like this really is, but one thing is certain — this is a year worth marking on the calendar.
☄️ Where Do Meteor Showers Actually Come From?
The principle behind a meteor shower is actually quite simple. Every time a comet swings close to the sun, it leaves behind a trail of dust and debris scattered along its orbit. When Earth's own orbit happens to cross that trail, these tiny fragments slam into our atmosphere at high speed and burn up from friction — and that's the streak of light we see. The Perseids' "parent comet" is 109P/Swift–Tuttle. Earth passes through the dust it left behind at the same point every year, which is why the Perseids arrive right on schedule every mid-August. The comet itself won't be visible that night — what we see is only the trail it left behind long ago.
🌌 There Are Actually Two Major Peaks a Year — And Seeing Them Isn't Really About Luck
Many people assume a meteor shower is a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle, but in fact Earth passes through two major debris trails every single year without fail: the Perseids in mid-August and the Geminids in mid-December — the two most active peaks of the year. The feeling that it's all "down to luck" usually comes from overlooking three key conditions — timing, location, and weather, none of which can be skipped: Timing: aim for the few hours around the peak, and avoid a full moon (moonlight washes out faint meteors) — the best window is usually between midnight and dawn Location: get away from city light pollution; an open, unobstructed sky matters more than anything else Weather: a clear, cloud-free sky overhead is the most basic requirement According to Starwalk and the Hong Kong Space Museum, the two peaks each have their own advantages this year:

Quick fact — what counts as the "Northern Hemisphere"? Simply put, anywhere north of the equator: Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, Korea, all of Europe, and the US and Canada are all within it. So a place like Kansai, Japan is actually an ideal viewing region for the Perseids — no need to worry about "not being in the Northern Hemisphere."
Comparing the two: this year the Perseids coincide with a new moon, meaning zero moonlight interference — about as perfect a condition as it gets. The Geminids have slightly more moonlight, but their radiant rises right around sunset, so Northern Hemisphere viewers can start watching from early evening, giving a longer viewing window overall. In other words, it was never really about luck — it's about doing your homework and picking the right time and place.
🔭Are Observatories Worth It? Let's Be Clear About Their Role
Kansai is home to several well-known public observatories — Wakayama's Misato Observatory (a 105cm reflector), Hyogo's Nishi-Harima Observatory (the 200cm "Nayuta" telescope), and Okayama's Bisei Observatory (a 101cm telescope, with Bisei town itself certified as an International Dark Sky Community). Their strength is guided tours where you can get an up-close look at planets, star clusters, and even comets through a large telescope — great for families or anyone new to astronomy.
But if your goal is specifically to watch a meteor shower, these venues aren't actually the best choice:
Language: guided tours are mostly in Japanese, which can be a communication barrier
Field of view too narrow: watching meteors means scanning a wide stretch of open sky with the naked eye — a telescope's narrow field actually works against you
Limited opening hours: most are open only from around 8 to 10pm, missing the meteor shower's best window between midnight and dawn
So my suggestion: if you want to get up close with planets and deepen your astronomy knowledge, an observatory is a great bonus stop. But for actually watching a meteor shower, you need somewhere open, unobstructed, and where you can comfortably stay until deep into the night.
🏕️ The Real Open-Sky Spots in Kansai for Meteor Watching
Here are a few locations well regarded by local astrophotographers for low light pollution, wide open views, and being comfortable to stay at late into the night:
Soni Highlands (Nara): a wide open silver-grass plateau with a clear view of the Milky Way; some light pollution from Osaka/Nara to the west, with cleaner views to the south and east.
Odaigahara (Nara/Mie border): often called "Kansai's best night sky" — high elevation and an extremely wide view make it a top pick among dedicated stargazers.
Oishi Highlands (Wakayama): not far from Izumisano, where Sora Campers is based; the silver-grass fields paired with the night sky make a popular composition, though there's slightly more light pollution to the north — the southern side offers a cleaner view.
Tonomine Highlands (Hyogo): a vast expanse of silver-grass plains with minimal light pollution, another popular meteor-watching destination.
Chihaya Recreation Area (Osaka): at roughly 1,125m elevation within the Kongo mountain range and inside Osaka Prefecture itself, accessible year-round — one of the easiest options if you're setting out from Osaka.
A few practical tips: avoid nights around the full moon and pick a clear, cloudless evening; mountain nights get cold even in summer, so bring warm layers; and check ahead whether overnight stays or parking are permitted at your chosen spot.
🚙 The Rooftop-Tent Overland 4x4 — A Stargazer's Best Companion
Most of these open-sky spots sit up in the mountains or highlands, often 1.5 to 3 hours away, and the best viewing window tends to fall between deep night and dawn — which is exactly where a rooftop-tent overland 4x4 earns its keep. These are true 4x4 trucks built for any terrain, not the boxy camper vans people often picture — the kind fitted with a toilet, kitchen, and full-size bed. That extra bulk adds weight, saps power, and makes a vehicle sway uncomfortably at highway speed, with none of the driving enjoyment. An overland 4x4 is a completely different breed: nimble, capable on any road surface, and genuinely fun to drive.
No need to worry about a dark, sleepy drive home after a night of meteor watching — park the truck, pop the rooftop tent, and that's your bed for the night. Winding mountain roads with unpredictable conditions feel far more reassuring with real 4x4 capability underneath you. And if you get restless and want to chase a gap in the clouds or a darker patch of sky, you can just start the engine and move. This, to me, is still the best way to chase stars in Kansai: drive up in an overland 4x4 and give the whole night over to the sky.
And really, when it comes down to it, the best spot and the best hour are often right where you already are — no need to drive anywhere else. Just pour yourself a warm cup of coffee, climb into the rooftop tent, and watch the meteors fall one by one. What more could you ask for?
🎒 When Sora Campers Took Us Chasing Stars: Memories of the 2025 Geminids

This wasn't the first time we'd taken meteor watching seriously. From December 11th to 16th, 2025, Sora Campers ran a "4x4 Overland Road Trip ✕ Geminid Meteor Photography Workshop" — travelling to Wakayama together with veteran photography instructor Francis So and renowned astrophotographer Mew Chu to watch and photograph the Geminids.

Over those six days, our small convoy of overland 4x4 trucks set out from Kansai Airport, drove out to watch sunrise at the Hashikui-iwa rock pillars in Kushimoto, and made camp at both the Senmaida rice-terrace campsite and Shirahama Ocean Park — with a few secluded campsites and hot-spring stays woven in along the way. It was a small-group trip with hands-on guidance throughout, and plenty of flexibility built into the itinerary.


Late one night at Shirahama's shoreline, meteors streaked across the sky above that little spiral-staircase lookout tower — Francis So and Mew Chu each came away with striking shots: a continuous meteor trail sequence, and a star-trail time-lapse circling the North Star all night. I still find myself pulling those images up to look at, even now.


That experience is part of why I feel so confident about this year's Perseid viewing plan — and it made me want to finally put together those behind-the-scenes moments and share them here. ☀️ What Makes This Year Special: A Total Eclipse, a Meteor Shower, and a Six-Planet Alignment
On the afternoon of August 12th, 2026, a total solar eclipse will be visible from Greenland, Iceland, Portugal, and Spain, while most of Europe will see a deep partial eclipse, with the sun largely obscured.
As it happens, that same morning before sunrise, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune will line up across the sky — four of them visible to the naked eye — and that same night the Perseids will hit their peak, coinciding with a new moon and zero moonlight interference. A total eclipse, a planetary alignment, and a meteor shower peak, all within a single day — that kind of coincidence really doesn't come around often.
Best viewing window: the Perseids tend to look their best in the final dark hours before dawn. If you can manage it, sleeping for a stretch, setting an alarm, and getting up right before first light is often more effective than keeping watch all night long.
📸Astrophotography Tips for You Photographing a meteor shower isn't as hard as it sounds. A few key points to remember:
Tripod: a sturdy, reliable tripod is essential — and turn on your camera's intervalometer so it fires continuously without you having to press the shutter every time
Shooting mode: full Manual (M)
ISO: 3200–6400
Aperture: as wide open as possible, e.g. f/2.8
Shutter speed: 22–30 seconds (keep it under 30 seconds, or stars start to trail — the real ceiling also depends on your lens's focal length; wider lenses allow longer exposures, so 22–30 seconds is a solid general range)
Focus: manually focus on the brightest star you can find, fine-tuning until the point of light is as sharp as possible — that's true infinity focus.

Once your settings are dialled in, you can just sit back and watch as one meteor after another gets captured through your lens. Later, back home, stack the continuous frames together in post and you can cut a "meteors streaking across the sky" time-lapse — perfect for Instagram, and guaranteed to turn a few heads.
