Some landscapes are meant to be savored slowly.
For this adventure, our coordinates were set right next to the ancient Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route—a trail steeped in thousands of years of spiritual history. Our destination? Sam’s Camp. What followed was an incredible Wakayama road trip blending wild mountain camping, fresh Kuroshio ocean delicacies, and Japan's most dramatic coastal geology.
🐟 First Stop: Sourcing Seafood at Toretore Market
To kick off our highly anticipated Shirahama self-drive adventure, we headed straight to the famous Toretore Market. As the largest seafood market in Western Japan, it is an absolute paradise for foodies. Because Shirahama faces the Pacific Ocean, the warm Kuroshio Current brings an incredibly rich and diverse marine ecosystem right to its shores, guaranteeing unmatched freshness.
The star attraction inside the market is undoubtedly the live Tuna Disassembly Show. Watching the master chefs skillfully carve massive bluefin tuna with giant, razor-sharp blades is a mesmerizing performance that draws gasps and cheers from the crowd.
Since the soul of any rooftop tent camping trip revolves around a great campfire BBQ, we went into full shopping mode. After packing our campervan's onboard fridge with plump scallops, juicy prawns, and premium cuts of wagyu, we happily steered our rig away from the coast and deep into the forested mountains.

After tackling the winding, scenic mountain passes for over an hour, we rolled through the gates of Sam’s Camp. Instantly, all driving fatigue evaporated.

🎴 A Gentle Midnight Encounter
As night fell over the mountains, we experienced a magical little interlude. Right beside our cabin, we spotted a tiny wild rabbit sitting completely frozen, looking exactly like a stone sculpture. Despite our group surrounding it and snapping endless photos, it refused to move a muscle.
After a quick search online, we learned that "playing statue" is a survival instinct for baby rabbits; they freeze to blend into the darkness while waiting for their mother to return. Sure enough, by the next morning, our little friend had safely hopped away, leaving us with one of the heartwarming highlights of our trip.
🍜 Coastal Exploration: Giant Shrimp Ramen & Geological Wonders
The next morning, we packed up our gear and drove our rig back toward the Shirahama coast to uncover more of its natural magic.
First on the agenda was lunch at the legendary local noodle shop, Shirahama Key Noodle Dakishimetai. This spot elevates local seafood to an art form. Their signature Red Sea Bream (Tai) Ramen features a broth that is intensely sweet, rich, and completely free of fishiness. They also serve a hyper-luxurious Giant Shrimp Ramen that is an absolute must-try—a massive explosion of umami flavors that will blow your taste buds away!
With full stomachs, we kicked off a sightseeing trek across Shirahama’s two most iconic natural wonders.
1. Senjojiki (The Thousand Tatami Mats)
In Japanese, Senjojiki literally translates to "a thousand overlapping tatami mats." This vast plateau of soft, white sandstone has been relentlessly sculpted by the fierce waves and howling gales of the Pacific Ocean over millennia. Walking across these massive, multi-layered rock tiers makes you feel incredibly small in the face of nature’s raw, artistic power.
2. Sandanbeki Cliffs & The Pirate Caves
Just a short drive away lie the magnificent Sandanbeki Cliffs. These sheer, 50-meter-high rock walls plunge vertically into the deep blue Pacific, creating a breathtaking and imposing sight.
We took an elevator 36 meters straight down into the subterranean Sandanbeki Caves. Here, you can stand just feet away from crashing swells as they roar into the cavern walls, throwing giant plumes of white spray into the air. Historically, these caves served as a hidden naval base for the legendary Kumano Navy during the Heian Period, adding a thrilling layer of samurai history to the geological wonder.
At the very top of the cliffs stands the quiet Lipstick Monument. This stone marker holds a melancholic, romantic tale: legend says a young couple, unable to overcome societal barriers to their love, wrote their final goodbyes on the rocks using lipstick before leaping into the ocean together. Erected by later generations, the monument serves as both a memorial to their eternal devotion and a poignant reminder to visitors of the preciousness of life and love.
🎒 Homeward Bound Along the Sunset Coast
As our sightseeing marathon concluded, evening began to fall. We drove our premium overland rig back toward the highway, chasing a spectacular golden sunset along Wakayama’s winding coastal roads.
