April's breeze is neither too hot nor too cold—the absolute perfect weather to grab your best friends and embark on a Kansai road trip adventure.

In this perfect season for an escape, we picked up our SORA campervan with a rooftop tent from Izumisano and headed straight north. Our destination? Japan’s largest and most iconic mother lake—Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. What followed was a soul-healing lakeside camping trip packed with stunning hidden gems and local culinary discoveries.

⛰️ Part 1. Shiga Road Trip Attractions: Zen Vibes at Kyu-Chikurin-in & "Imoko no Sato"

1. The Ultimate Instagram Spot at the Foot of Mt. Hiei: Kyu-Chikurin-in

With beautiful scenery flying past our windows, our first pitstop was Kyu-Chikurin-in, located at the base of Mt. Hiei. Once a historic residence for high-ranking monks, stepping inside instantly wraps you in vibrant greenery and serene tranquility.

The main highlight here is the viral "tabletop green reflection." The meticulously manicured Japanese garden is perfectly reflected on a polished black lacquered wooden table, creating a surreal, mirror-like illusion. It is an absolute must-visit photo spot in Shiga.

2. Stumbling Upon Hidden Delicacies: "Imoko no Sato" Roadside Station

Leaving the Zen vibes behind, we pulled over at "Imoko no Sato" Roadside Station, a spot we had driven past multiple times before and were dying to check out.

We learned that its unique name comes from Ono no Imoko, a famous Japanese historical diplomat who hailed from this region. While browsing the local specialty shop, our eyes caught something unexpected: wild venison (deer meat)! As camping enthusiasts, our BBQ radar instantly went off. Since it's not something you eat every day, we knew right then it was going to be tonight's campfire supper!

🌊 Part 2. Lake Biwa Campsite Recommendation: The Magic of Lakeside Overlanding

1. A Paradise for Water Sports Lovers: Biwako Marine Sports Auto Camping Ground

After a scenic drive, we finally arrived at our destination: Biwako Marine Sports Auto Camping Ground.

This unique campsite is located right inside a sports park, giving it a lively, energetic atmosphere. Aside from road trippers like us enjoying auto camping, there were plenty of Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) pros carving through the water. The campsite itself offers SUP experiences, but because our schedule was a bit tight, we had to save the water sports for our next visit.

2. Why a Campervan with a Rooftop Tent is the Ultimate Way to Travel Japan

As the sun began to dip toward the horizon, it was time to race against the clock to set up camp. This was the exact moment we fell in love with our SORA rooftop tent campervan all over again!

🏕️ The Campervan Advantage: If we were traditional tent camping, we would still be sweating, hammering stakes, and wrestling with poles in the dark. But with a campervan? You just park, pop open the rooftop tent in seconds, set out your camp chairs, and your mobile castle is ready. Zero hassle, maximum comfort—this is the ultimate freedom of campervan travel.
⚠️ LAKE BIWA CAMPING TIP:
The showers at this specific campsite close early at 5:00 PM, which can be tight if you prefer a late-night wash. If you miss the window, don't worry! You can easily drive your campervan to a nearby traditional Japanese Onsen (hot spring) for a relaxing soak.

🍖 Part 3. Lakeside BBQ Under the Sunset & Sleeping to the Sound of Waves

We got everything set up just in time for sunset.

As the sun sank over Lake Biwa, exploding into hues of gold and crimson across the rippling water, all the exhaustion from the day’s drive instantly melted away. Under the evening sky, we grilled our newly discovered venison over the sizzling charcoal and poured a few drinks. Enjoying a hearty meal surrounded by raw nature is an experience words simply cannot do justice.

As night fell, it was time to crawl up into our cozy rooftop tent. Being Japan’s largest lake, Lake Biwa’s waves can get quite spirited at night.

💡 Campsite Pitching Tip: If you are a light sleeper or sensitive to noise, we highly recommend booking a spot slightly further back from the shoreline. However, for us, the rhythmic crashing of the lake waves acted as the perfect natural white noise, lulling us into a deep, peaceful sleep.

🥐 Part 4. A Real-Life Studio Ghibli World: La Collina Baumkuchen Factory

The next morning, we woke up naturally to the gentle sound of waves and chirping birds. After brewing a quick breakfast inside the campervan and soaking in the crisp morning air, we packed up camp and headed to our final major stop: La Collina Omihachiman.

This famous confectionery factory in Shiga is an architectural marvel. Its iconic, massive grass-covered roof glows with vibrant green life. Walking onto the grounds feels like stepping straight into a Studio Ghibli fairytale—every single corner is incredibly photogenic!

The air here is thick with the sweet aroma of baking. Their signature Baumkuchen (German spit cake) is a must-buy souvenir. It is incredibly moist, delicate, and perfectly sweet. If you ever visit Shiga Prefecture, you absolutely cannot miss it.

🎒 Conclusion & Heading Back

With Sora's campervan packed full of Shiga's local treats, we happily started our drive back to Izumisano.

This Lake Biwa road trip had it all: mountains, lakes, gourmet food, fairytale architecture, and the unmatched comfort and security of a rooftop tent campervan. If you are planning a Kansai road trip or looking for the ultimate Japan campervan rental experience, Lake Biwa is a destination that will never disappoint.

Lake Biwa, we will definitely see you again!
