Lake Biwa is one of the best camping destinations in Japan, yet many visitors to Kansai only think of Kyoto or Osaka.

As Japan’s largest freshwater lake, Lake Biwa offers breathtaking lakefront scenery, beautiful sunrises, water activities, and a wide variety of campsites. Whether you’re travelling with a rooftop tent, camper rental, or your own camping gear, you’ll find a campsite that suits your style.

If you’re planning a road trip from Osaka, Kyoto, or Kansai Airport, camping around Lake Biwa is an unforgettable experience.

🏕️Free Camping at Lake Biwa

Many travellers are surprised to learn that Lake Biwa has several free camping areas.

Although these locations don’t offer the same facilities as commercial campgrounds, they’re perfect for campers looking to save money while enjoying incredible lakeside views.

Most free campsites provide:

* Public toilets

* Parking areas

* Open grassy spaces

* Direct access to Lake Biwa

However, they usually do not include:

* Hot showers

* Electricity

* Camp kitchens (some locations)

* Convenience stores

These campsites are best suited for campers with their own equipment or travellers renting a fully equipped camper.

If you’re wondering where to shower, there’s no need to worry. Throughout Japan you’ll easily find:

* Public bathhouses (Sento)

* Day-use hot springs (Onsen)

Most are within a 10–20 minute drive from the campsites, making them a convenient option after a day outdoors.

The campground also offers paid shower facilities, making it comfortable for multi-day camping trips.

2️⃣Shirahamaso Auto Campground (白浜荘オートキャンプ場)

Shirahamaso offers two very different camping experiences.

You can choose between:

* Lakefront camping sites

* Shaded forest sites

The forest area is ideal during summer, while the lakefront sites provide uninterrupted views of Lake Biwa.

One important thing to note is that the front-row lakeside campsites do not have electrical hookups, so be sure to check your reservation if you require electricity.

Another advantage is that a nearby hot spring makes it easy to relax after a day of camping.

Highlights

* Lakefront and shaded camping areas

* Nearby hot spring

* Excellent for families and beginners

3️⃣Takagihama Auto Campground (高木浜オートキャンプ場)

Takagihama is another favourite among campers visiting northern Lake Biwa.

Like Shirahamaso, it offers both lakeside and wooded camping areas.

The campground is especially popular with anglers, as many visitors launch directly onto Lake Biwa for fishing.

If you enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing, paddleboarding, or kayaking, this campground is a fantastic choice.

Highlights

* Lakeside and forest camping areas

* Popular fishing destination

* Great access to water activities

Oku Biwako Campground offers one of the widest selections of accommodation around Lake Biwa.

Options include:

* Traditional cabins

* Cabins with private bathrooms

* Permanent tents

* Auto camping sites

One of its biggest attractions is the elevated auto camping area, where campers enjoy panoramic views across Lake Biwa.

Early risers are rewarded with breathtaking sunrise views over the lake.

5️⃣Oku-Eigenji BASE (奥永源寺BASE)

Although not located directly beside Lake Biwa, Oku-Eigenji BASE is one of the most recommended campgrounds in Shiga Prefecture.

Unlike many open campgrounds, each camping area is separated by fencing, offering much greater privacy.

This makes it especially popular among campers travelling with dogs.

A short walk from the campground leads to a beautiful river where visitors can swim and cool off during summer.

Before heading back to Osaka or Kyoto, many travellers also stop by Mitsui Outlet Park Shiga Ryuo for shopping.

Highlights

* Private fenced campsites

* Pet-friendly environment

* River for summer swimming

Explore Lake Biwa by Camper

One of the best ways to experience Lake Biwa is by camper rental.

Instead of staying in one hotel, you can wake up beside a different part of the lake each morning, enjoy spectacular scenery, and explore Shiga at your own pace.

With a fully equipped rooftop tent camper from Sora Campers, you don’t need to bring bulky camping gear from overseas. Simply pick up your vehicle in Osaka and begin your Lake Biwa road trip.

Whether you’re travelling from Osaka, Kyoto, or Kansai International Airport, Lake Biwa is an easy and rewarding destination for your next camping adventure.
