When most people think of a self-drive road trip in Japan, they imagine renting a standard compact car, following basic GPS routes to crowded tourist spots, and staying in traditional hotels every night.
This time, Sora Campers is here to completely rewrite the rules.
We hopped into our rugged 4x4 off-road pickup truck—the Toyota Hilux—fully outfitted with a premium hardshell rooftop tent and packed to the brim with camping gear and professional photography equipment. 🗺️ Day 1 Route: Leaving the Beaten Path
Setting off from Kansai International Airport (KIX), we steered our rig straight north. Our destination wasn’t a mainstream tourist trap, but rather a remote, breathtaking sanctuary cradled by the Sea of Japan that even most locals have never set foot on: The Oki Islands.
This is a 5-day, 4-night overland expedition crossing mountains and seas—a true testament to what a 4x4 rooftop tent truck rental can do. Join us as we explore a life without boundaries and embrace the ultimate "Sora" lifestyle: wild, free, and completely unbothered.
🌸 Act I: Vibrant Flower Oceans & The Majestic Mt. Daisen
Our first major stop brought our muscular 4x4 Hilux into Tottori Prefecture, arriving at Japan’s largest floral sanctuary: Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park.
Under the bright May midday sun, the park was ablaze with thousands of colors. The most breathtaking moment? Crouching low within the swaying sea of blue Nemophila (baby blue eyes) flowers while gazing up at the distant peaks of Mt. Daisen piercing the blue sky. The stark contrast between the vivid blue petals and the rugged mountain ridge was pure poetry.
Leaving the flowers behind, the Hilux tackled the winding mountain passes toward a legendary romantic landmark: Daisen Masumizu Highland. Here, we boarded the Masumizu Sky Lift (famously designated as a "Lover's Sanctuary"). Reaching the summit, we sank into suspended hammocks, gently swaying in the mountain breeze while soaking in panoramic views of the endless green grasslands rolling down toward Yonago and Tottori City.
Once back down, it was time for the real overlanding highlight. We carved through the twisting mountain roads to reach the most iconic photography spot for the mountain's rugged south face: Kagikake Pass Observation Deck. The fresh, vibrant spring greenery framing our tough Toyota Hilux perfectly captured the wild spirit of our journey.

🌌 Camp 1: Sleeping Under the Milky Way at the "Sky Campsite"
Bidding farewell to Kagikake Pass, we chased the fading light to the first major highlight of our trip: Masumizu Tenku Camp (Sky Campsite), perched at an altitude of 900 meters. As dusk fell, the city lights of Tottori and Yonago began to twinkle far below like a blanket of diamonds.
For true overlanders, astrophotography and night shooting are the absolute soul of wild camping. Miles away from urban light pollution, the night sky reveals its most guarded secrets. Fortuitously, summer is the absolute golden season for Milky Way photography.
At 900 meters above sea level, the nighttime temperature plummeted close to a freezing 5°C. Yet, the moment we popped open our rooftop tent and dialed in our tripods, the biting cold was instantly forgotten.
A massive, glowing arch of the Milky Way spanned the heavens, pouring down like a cosmic waterfall directly over our Hilux rig.
