Planning a short Japan road trip from Osaka but don't want to spend the whole trip in the city?


A 2-day, 1-night camping trip is a great way to experience a different side of Japan — from quiet mountain villages and hot springs to beautiful coastlines and fresh seafood.


We've put together three easy 2-day Japan road trip itineraries from Osaka, each with a different style of travel.


Whether you love mountains, outdoor activities, history, or the ocean, there's an itinerary for you.


And if you have a longer rental period, these routes can easily be extended into a deeper 3–5 day Japan camping road trip.


Route 1: Totsukawa Village × Tanize Suspension Bridge × Koyasan


🌲 Mountains, Suspension Bridges, Camping & Japanese Culture


Best for: Nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts and travelers interested in Japanese history and culture.


Our first route takes you deep into the mountains of southern Nara, visiting Totsukawa Village, one of the largest villages in Japan by area.


The area is surrounded by mountains, rivers and forests, making it a great destination for a quiet Japan camping road trip.


Day 1｜Osaka → Totsukawa Village → Tanize Suspension Bridge


Start your journey from Osaka and drive toward Totsukawa Village.

The drive takes approximately 2 hours, depending on traffic and your starting point.

A good first stop is Sakurayama Hotel Café, where you can take a break before continuing into the mountains.

Next, head to one of Totsukawa's most famous attractions:

Tanize Suspension Bridge

Tanize no Tsuri-bashi is one of the most iconic sights in Totsukawa.

The long suspension bridge stretches high above the valley, offering impressive views of the surrounding mountains and river.

If you enjoy nature and a little adventure, this is a great place to stop and stretch your legs.

Tanize Suspension Bridge

After visiting the bridge, head to your campsite.

You can choose between:

  • Tsuribashi no Sato Campground

  • Tanize Suspension Bridge Auto Camp

Both are located close to the famous suspension bridge.

Set up your tent, prepare dinner and enjoy a peaceful night surrounded by mountains.

Day 2｜Koyasan → Kongobu-ji → Osaka


On the second day, head toward Koyasan, one of Japan's most important Buddhist sacred sites.


Visit Kongobu-ji Temple, the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon Buddhist school.

Take some time to explore the temple and surrounding streets before starting your journey back toward Osaka.


If your schedule allows, you can also stop at Hine Shrine on the way back.

This route is perfect if you want to experience the quieter, more traditional side of Japan.


Route 2: Dorogawa Onsen × Limestone Cave × Tenkawa Village

Best for: Families, nature lovers, summer trips and travelers looking for a cooler mountain escape.


Our second route takes you to Tenkawa Village in Nara Prefecture.

Located in the Omine mountain region, Tenkawa is known for its mountain scenery, clear rivers, hot springs and traditional Japanese mountain culture.


It's particularly attractive during summer when the mountainous environment offers a refreshing escape from the heat.


Day 1｜Dorogawa Onsen → Ryusenji Temple → Limestone Cave → Tenkawa

Start your day at the Dorogawa Onsen Visitor Center.

This is a good place to learn more about the area before exploring the surrounding mountains.

Next, visit Ominezan Ryusenji Temple, an important site connected with the traditional Shugendo mountain religion.

Then head underground to Menfudo Limestone Cave.

The cave offers a completely different experience from the mountain scenery outside and is a fun addition to a camping road trip.


After exploring the cave, continue toward Tenkawa Village.

For the evening, you can stay at a campsite in the Dorogawa or Tenkawa area, depending on your preferred camping style.

Set up camp, enjoy dinner and spend the evening surrounded by mountains.


Day 2｜Kansai Cycle Sports Center → Osaka

On the way back to Osaka, stop at the Kansai Cycle Sports Center.

This outdoor attraction is dedicated to cycling and offers a variety of cycling experiences and activities.

It's particularly suitable for:

After enjoying the activities, continue back toward Osaka.

If you're traveling during summer, this is one of the routes I'd consider first.


Route 3: Shirahama × Engetsu Island × Seaside Camping


🌊 Beaches, Sunset, Seafood & Ocean Camping


Best for: Couples, friends, first-time campers and anyone who loves the ocean.


If mountain camping isn't your thing, head south to Shirahama in Wakayama.


This is probably the easiest and most relaxing of the three itineraries.


Shirahama is one of Wakayama's most popular seaside destinations, known for its beaches, dramatic coastline, seafood and beautiful sunsets.


Day 1｜Wakayama Coast → Local Seafood → Engetsu Island


Start your road trip by driving along the Wakayama coastline.

Stop at Yotte Te Nanki-no-dai, a local market where you can pick up fresh produce and ingredients.

Then continue to Toretore Park, a great place to buy fresh seafood and local food.

If you're camping that night, you can pick up ingredients for a BBQ and enjoy them at your campsite later.


In the afternoon, head toward one of Shirahama's most iconic landmarks:

Engetsu Island

Engetsu Island

Engetsu Island is famous for the natural sea arch in the middle of the island.

At sunset, the sun can appear through the opening in the rock, creating one of Shirahama's most beautiful coastal views.


Try to arrive in time for sunset before returning to your campsite.

Day 2｜Shirahama Beach → Senjojiki → Sandanbeki


Start your morning at Shirarahama Beach.

The white sand and blue water make it one of Wakayama's most recognizable beaches.

Then continue to:

Senjojiki

This huge natural rock formation was shaped by waves and erosion over thousands of years.

The layered rocks create a dramatic coastline and are particularly beautiful on a clear day.

Finally, visit:

Sandanbeki Cliffs

The cliffs rise dramatically above the Pacific Ocean and offer spectacular coastal views.

After exploring the area, start your drive back to Osaka.

The route is straightforward, the scenery is varied and there are plenty of places to stop along the way.

Two days and one night is enough for a short escape from Osaka, but a longer rental gives you much more freedom.
