You must hold a valid Japanese driver's license or an international driver's license that complies with Japanese regulations. (An "International Driving Permit (IDP)" in accordance with the format of the 1949 Geneva Convention, or an "original driving permit + Japanese translation" issued by Taiwan, Belgium, France, Germany, Monaco, Switzerland, Slovenia, or other countries. An International Driving Permit is valid for one year from the date of issuance and is valid for one year upon entry into Japan.)

In principle, the applicant must be at least 25 years old. If the driver is under 25, they must purchase the highest value insurance plan.
